Press release:
An exhibit of paintings by Deborah Barlow will be on display at the Thomas Memorial Library Gallery in Cape Elizabeth from January 2 through 31, 2012. An opening reception and artist talk will be held on January 13 from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. The event is free and open to the public.
“Apparent Glimmerings” features both large and small scale works by the Boston-based painter in her first exhibit in Maine. The show in Cape Elizabeth follows recent solo exhibitions by the artist in Provincetown, Santa Fe, Brooklyn and San Francisco.
“Barlow’s paintings are mysterious and masterful,” said Julia Bassett Schwerin, a member of the Cape Elizabeth Arts Commission and Manager of the TML Gallery. “They can suggest a glimpse through the lens of a microscope as well as a NASA photograph of space.”
In a review in Art in New England, critic Jan Lhormer wrote that “Barlow combines minimalism and ‘maximalism’ to fuse a unique vision…a deep sense of form underlies the complex, nonobjective picture plane, linking the work to landscape and elements of nature.” This summer Art News magazine described Barlow’s approach as a “soulful, sympathetic sensibility that is rare to find in such an obsessive technician.”
“I draw inspiration from a rich and complex array of sources that include nature, science, landscape, Western and non-Western artistic traditions, esoterica, language, indigenous cultures and digital imaging to name a few,” said Barlow. “I bring these disparate elements together to create a sense of wonder, mystery and enchantment.”
Originally from California, Barlow studied art at the University of California at Santa Cruz before moving to New York City in the 1970s to continue her artistic development. Since her first solo show in Manhattan when she was 26, she has continued to exhibit her work throughout the United States and Europe. She lives in Brookline Massachusetts and works out of a studio in South Boston.
The exhibit is sponsored by the Cape Elizabeth Arts Commission.
